Q:I just read some recaps of kindred that mistook abbie's line about crane being her weakness as her professing her love for him which is pissing me off. They said she looked sad when ichabod was talking about katrina so that must mean she has feelings for him. Are you kidding me? Way to completely misunderstand subtext. If anything, her self-awareness is gonna make her extra wary of any future romantic entanglement with crane. Abbie would never pine over someone so reckless and overemotional.
Yeah, a lot of people misread that. I sort of understand - it was an episode extremely low on Ichabbie stuff so people are scrounging for scraps, and I’m sure there’s also a fair chunk of people who read it like that to paint Abbie as pining for Ichabod for other reasons too - but yeah nope, that’s not what was happening there.
She’s realizing she has been following him a little too blindly, trusted in and depended on him a bit much, and to her at least that’s just 100% in a friend/partner way - whatever potential romantic feelings she has for Ichabod she’s completely unaware of, and really, I think it really is just that: potential feelings, which is not the same as actual ones. But she does know they do have a close relationship - they’re the two Witnesses, partnered up in the more dire of situations facing unimaginable horrors, and she didn’t have anyone when he showed up and vice versa - and maybe she can see a bit of the warning signs in herself that she sees in Crane with Katrina. Not in a romantic way but in a “this is not good for me” way, like this is something that’s a liability and a risk - this is a wake-up call for her, something that maybe tells her she needs to take a step back and gain some perspective.
One thing I see people saying a lot is that Abbie does this because she’s more aware of/invested in being a Witness, to her duty and purpose in that, but honestly I think that’s only a smaller part of it. I think it’s more that she recognizes that blind trust isn’t a good thing, that faith shouldn’t lead you to actually jump off the cliff if someone says so. I *hope* she also realizes with this that this is why there are two Witnesses, this is why they need each other and why they have to be equal partners and why they’re both equally important.
